What is ELLA?

Early Learning Languages Australia (ELLA) is a fun, digital, play-based language learning program for children in preschool. It helps children to become more comfortable with different languages early in life so that they can stay engaged with learning languages in later years.

Children in the ELLA program learn language through applications ('apps'), called The Polyglots. The apps are used on tablet devices and have been specifically designed for preschool children. They are currently available in nine languages: Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), French, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Modern Greek or Spanish.

ELLA is part of the Australian Government's commitment to supporting language study in Australia.

ELLA at Greengables

At Greengables the ELLA program is run in our Butterfly Room as part of our Preschool Program. We are currently focusing on two languages - Mandarin and Greek covering each day of the week over a two week cycle. This provides all children in the Butterfly Room the opportunity to participate in the program. ELLA provides opportunities for educators to learn the language alongside the children in a collaborative way.

What are the benefits of ELLA?

The children can expand their knowledge of how language works and apply these skills to other literacy tasks, such as listening carefully to sounds in words. These skills can be used when the children learn to read and write. ELLA also helps to develop foundation skills, such as learning colours, counting and greetings.

ELLA can also create opportunities to celebrate culture and diversity, share home languages, and strengthen links between families and children services.
